XXXTENTACION ensured he’d be consistent in the headlines today, as we lead up to his album release at Midnight, with his controversial Instagram post where he appeared to hang himself. This came just a day after announcing the album’s tracklist and revealing the cover art. If there’s one thing you probably know about XXXTENTACION, and assuming that one thing isn’t his music, then it’s the fact that he does controversial, news-worthy shit. Even so, XXX responded to the reactions to yesterday’s Instagram post stating it’s not a publicity stunt, rather a scene from his upcoming music video. He says: “if you thought I would “pretend” to kill myself for a publicity stunt you’re fucking stupid.” Hmm. Still feels like a last bid at publicity for 17, what do you think?
Even if it is just to stir up interest for 17, that doesn’t say anything bad of XXXTENTACION’s music, which often runs the gambit in terms of sound. That means you could, surprisingly or not, find something you legitimately like on his Soundcloud, or on this upcoming album. For a taste off 17, specifically for the Soundcloud masses (XXXTENTACION says: “I will not be uploading the album to soundcloud, so here is one song from it.”), XXX just debuted “Fuck Love” with fellow Soundcloud-approved rapper Trippie Redd. This one’s mellow, like if emo-indie-rock met r’n’b. Both artists use melodic flows to do more singing than rapping, over key-riddled production and flittering hi-hats. These two previously collaborated as well on the remix “Uh Oh, Thots!,” which has a bit more energy to it if this one’s too sombre for your liking.
