Kodak Black’s deluxe edition of his 2017 album Project Baby 2 features 8 new tracks and two features. Those features happen to be from two rappers who have in the past been as close as family, but have now been feuding for years: Lil Wayne and Birdman. It’s a curious but most likely coincidental choice, and brings to mind the unfortunate reality that the Cash Money legends could not be featured together with Kodak.
As it stands, “Projects” is a well-executed co-sign from one of Southern rap’s great A&Rs, as Birdman shows up to give props to Kodak, who’s easily one of the biggest breakout stars from his region in recent memory. Co-sign or not, Kodak holds his own with an emotionally charged verse that details his struggles before he found a way out through rap. The timeless organ sounds make for a backdrop that’s as cross-generational as it comes.
